The Chunnel May Not Be For Me

5 Aug

The Channel Tunnel, or Chunnel, is an undersea tunnel that allows travelers to travel from England to France. Honestly, the idea of it kind of freaks me out, it’s an underwater tunnel that lasts for about 30 miles. There have been incidents… recent incidents… of trains stopping in the tunnel for fairly long amounts of time. Yes, I realize it doesn’t happen too often but with my luck, it would happen when I’m on it. Being a little claustrophobic, I don’t think it bodes too well for me. On the other hand, the Chunnel is extremely convenient and an experience in itself! I feel like I should travel on it when I go to Paris. I can think of about a million things that could go wrong in an underwater (keyword… UNDERWATER) tunnel, can’t you?

In my imagination, when one travels through the Chunnel, one can see through a fish tank-like tunnel where  the fish and other creatures of the English Channel are in plain sight.

But, it really just looks like a train, or subway, and probably feels like a train, or subway, when you’re traveling through the sea.

My thoughts? Ehhh… I’m still iffy… the thought of being in an underwater tunnel for a long period of time scares me. I may take good ol’ Ryan air to Paris, flying throughout Europe is fairly cheap, and taking a plane sounds much more appealing than traveling underwater with the thought of getting stuck looming in the back of my mind all the way to Paris and all the way back to London.

I Think I’m Too Excited…

4 Aug

I leave for London in 28 days. I fly out of Newark, New Jersey on September 1st and will be away from home and everything familiar to me for over 3 months, until December 12. I’m surprisingly not nervous, two of my best friends will also be studying abroad in London, so I already have some guaranteed friends. I think I’m too excited to be nervous.  London is said to be an amazing, fashionable, fun, historic city. Also, I can legally drink in London which is much different than my life as a 19-year-old in America. Ordering a drink with dinner will soon be a common occurrence for me .

Since I have been looking forward to London for months now, I am unbelievably excited for September 1st. Everything I see I somehow relate to London, the other day I went into Gap and saw a cardigan I really liked. I immediately thought, wow, this would look great in London. I mean, it would look good in London, but it would also look good anywhere else, even my hometown; a small (boring) coastal, Connecticut town. Cardigans look good anywhere. But, in my mind this particular cardigan would look specifically nice in London.

I do need to buy some new clothes for London, though. I hear the Brits dress very well, and while I consider myself a well-dressed American… am I a well-dressed European?

No, probably not. I’m heading to New York City on Sunday for a day of shopping for fashionable clothes and shoes for London, although I can’t spend too much money, the British pound is currently 1.58 to America’s dollar, that spells trouble.

I’m too excited for my own good, the days are passing so slowly. But, I can’t help it.

Get me on that United Airlines flight to Heathrow, now!

Live vicariously through me while I’m in Europe

Ever since I was young I have wanted to study abroad. Now is finally my time to do so. I will be spending my Fall 2010 semester in London, England. This is my blog to share my adventures and experiences in Europe and to post about the excitement and preparation in leading up to my day of departure (September 1st!). Enjoy my blog and feel free to live vicariously though me!
